The second international conference on photo metadata took place on Malta today during the annual Cepic congress. The first one was in Florence a year ago. This is a brief summary of this day. I will follow up with longer articles on each part later.

What really impresses me is the progress of work since last year’s conference. Several of the issues that were raised last year are now under serious progression. Normally standardization work is painfully slow, and when you come to implementation it is even worse. But here you see even competing parties cooperating to make progress.

Last conference was centered around the by that time just published white paper on photo metadata. This paper pointed out several areas where the IPTC standard needed to be extended or changed. People wanted special fields for model releases, better fields for localization, flexible fields for controlled vocabulary data (emotions, dominant color, art classification) and several more fields. IPTC has just published draft 4 of a proposed addendum, as well as some modifications to the current standard. This addresses most of those requests and IPTC will vote on this later this month.

David Riecks presented at survey conducted by SAA on embedded metadata in previews and thumbnails on the websites of major image agencies. The result is depressing. Most images carry none, or very limited, metadata. Of those images that contained metadata, very few uses the newer XMP encoding, the old IIM encoding is totally dominant. This is really sad to learn – especially if other parts of the industry put a lot of effort into improving standards. The common reason why previews lack data is that the image scaling and watermarking software’s used in content management systems strips all metadata.

One huge issue with images not carrying even basic metadata such as photographer and copyright is the upcoming orphan works legislation. It’s one thing that people outside the image industry doesn’t embed this. But when the major image agencies don’t even comply, it’s a disaster. Photographers might find that their images have been “free to use” due to bad handling at the image agency they trusted to sell their work.

The last speaker was Hiroshi Maeno from Canon. Last year Nikon, Canon and Hasselblad was asked if they could implement a globally unique image identifier (GUID) that is embedded in the image file by the camera. There were also request for embedding other metadata. CIPA has now formed “Image File Format Study Ad.Hoc Working Group” that involves several camera manufactures cooperating to improve the Exif standard. Earlier 2008 they sent a request to IPTC on what should be improved regarding metadata. Mr Maeno reported that both Canon and Nikon are already working on the GUID and showed us an example on such a code could be constructed. The ad hoc working group has just sent a report to the CIPA board regarding suggested improvements to the EXIF standard.

Unilever och deras varumärke Dove är i blåsväder för sin kampanj “Campaign for Real Beauty”. Enligt bland annat Dagens Media så är bilderna av de kurviga tjejerna retuscherade. De har fått detta ifrån en artikel i The New Yorker där Lauren Collins intervjuar den kända retuschören Pascal Dangin. Föjande citat finns ungefär i mitten av denna intervju:

“The people who complain about retouching are the first to say, ‘Get this thing off my arm.’ ” I mentioned the Dove ad campaign that proudly featured lumpier-than-usual “real women” in their undergarments. It turned out that it was a Dangin job. “Do you know how much retouching was on that?” he asked. “But it was great to do, a challenge, to keep everyone’s skin and faces showing the mileage but not looking unattractive.”

Själv är jag inte speciellt förvånad över att bilderna är retuscherade. Egentligen känns det inte speciellt upprörande. Bara det faktum att Dove använder modeller med lite mer kurvor än konkurrenterna är positivt. Probelemt är att de gör det i en kampanj som de kallar för “real beauty”. Med den titeln får man nog vara beredd att löpa linan ut och hålla sig till äkta fotografi – vad nu det skulle vara. Myten om kameran som objektiv mekanisk avbildare av verkligheten avlivades ju redan för 150 år sedan. Sanningen är att retusch av foto är lika gammalt som fototekniken…

Efter en längre tids problem med den gamla xoops-baserade programvaran för min ordbok fotoord.se med fototermer har jag äntligen fått tid att flytta allt innehåll till en Wiki.

Första svårigheten var att välja programvara. Efter en del läsande och många våndor fick det blir MediaWiki som är den som används av Wikipedia. Installationen gick smidigt.

Nästa steg var att flytta allt innehåll. Med nästan 800 ord i listan innebar detta en hel del manuellt jobb. Jag hittade inget bra sätt att automatisera överflyttningen. Det finns en stor fördel men manuell flyttning – man fick ett bra tillfälle att gö över hela materialet rätta en hel del fel – men risken är att jag skapat en hel del nya

Sen kom en överraskning. Jag vill ju helst att externa länkar till specifika ord i listan ska fortsätt att fungera. Detta hade jag tänkt lösa med att använda kommandot RedirectMap i .htaccess – men chi fick jag. Detta kommando är inte tillåtet där utan bara i servern centrala konfigurationsfil. SKIT!!! Lösningen fick bli ett eget litet PHP-hack som använder den gamla databasen och gör redirect till motsvarande ord i den nya wikin. Detta verkar nu fungera!

Nu återstår “bara” allt fixande med alla sidor med inor, kategorier och annat som måste skapas i den nya wikin…

Hittade ett gammat inlägg som aldrig blivit publicerat – men apropå debatter kring utställningar så är det lika bra att lägga ut det oxå…

Jag tycker att Lars Vilks har rätt att både ställa ut och publicera sina bilder av Mohammed som rondellhund. Yttrandefrihet och tryckfrihet är två av demokratins grundbultar. Det känns otroligt frustrerande att en majoritet av våra folkvalda riksdagsmän och kvinnor kan tänka sig att begränsa våra demokratiska rättigheter. När det gäller publiceringen av de danska Mohammed-teckningarna så tykcer jag att det åtminstone var rätt att göra den första publiceringen. Men jag är tveksam till om det var nödvändigt att alla de andra tidningarna skulle följa efter – bara för att visa att de min sann oxå vågade. Varför hälla bensin på en brasa som redan brinner. Om man redan nått målet att få igång en debatt så blir ju i regel inte debatten bättre bara för att man mal på med samma argument.

Problemet med Lars Vilks teckning – åtminstone i mina ögon – är att det enda den tillför är tändvätska på den brasa som nu äntligen hade börjat falna. Jag vet inte om detta var hans syfte – jag har åtminstone inte uppfattat något annat budskap.

The pen is mightier than the sword [Edward Bulwer-Lytton] – är ett klassiskt ordspråk, ofta citerad i texter som syftar till att en debattörs text kan ha mycket större makt och inflytande än våld. I många fall är det nog oxå sant.

Men om man vill ha riktig sprängkraft i sitt budskap ska man använda en bild. En bild går rakt in i hjärtat på ett annat sätt en en text. Jag misstänker att det har att göra med att den kan tala till primitivare delar av vår hjärna. Människan kunde ju rita långt innan vi uppfann skriftspråket. Sett har vi ju gjort långt innan vi kunde tala. En bra bild har större trovärdighet än en text. Det är ju enklare att ljuga i text än i bild.

Med jämna mellanrum kommer det ut böcker eller artiklar om bilder som förändrade historien. Vem kommer inte ihåg Eddie Adams bild från Vietnamkriget där en polischef kallblodigt avrättar en krigsfånge på en öppen gata. Eller Stuart Franklins bild av en ensam man som ställer sig framför en kolonn med stridsvagnar på Himmelska Fridens torg.

Jag skaffade nyligen en led-lampa till min videokamera. När man filmar reportage eller dokumentär på kvällen eller inomhus behövs ofta ett smidigt sätt att lysa upp delar av motivet. Om man intervjuar en person vill man ju se deras ansikte tydligt. Det finns gott om olika typer av halogenspotar för kamera montage. Men de drar hiskeligt med ström och kräver extra batterier.

På Nackamässan gick jag runt och kollade på lite olika typer av LED-lampor. En LED lampa använder lysdioder istället för glödlampor. De är mycket effektivare (strömsnålare) än vanliga glödlampor. Problemet med flera av de LED-lampor som jag kollade på var att de inte gav en jämn ljusbild, i värsta fall en fläckig ljusbild. I Hofmann Tekniks monter hade de dock en armatur som jag jag blev imponerade av – bortsett från priset Men förutom ljusbilden var det ytterligare ett argument som jag tyckte vägde tungt (eller snarare lätt viktmässigt), den gick att strömförsörja från kamerans batteri. Det innebär kortare filmtid, men mindre vikt att släpa på.

Den kameralampa som jag köpte heter Bebob Lux-LED och kostar drygt 6000 kr ex moms.

I samband med filmfestivalen fick jag ett första tilfälel att filma med den. Jag använde den som huvudljus för utomhusintervjuer och som upplättning inomhus. Lampan är steglöst dimbar vilket är underbart när man kör den som upplättingsljus. En försel med just LED är att de kan dimmas med i princip oförändrad färgtemperatur – vilket är smidigt. Fats apropå färgtemperatur, det är just den som är lite av baksidan när man ska använda den för att matcha ljus från glödlamport. Denna armatur ger ett kallt ljus (ca 5000 K), För att matcha den med glödlampsljus satte jag på ett orange filter. Fast det verkar krävas en del experimenterande för att hitta ett filter som funkar bra. Troligen blir det lite extra trixit eftersom LED inte har kontinuerligt spektrum, så det blir förmodligen olika resultat beroende på kamerans RGB-filter. Det finns andra tillverkare som har armaturer med ställbar färgtemperatur (och färg), det är nog en klart trevlig lösning.

Nåväl – som helhet är jag jättenöjd med detta första försök med detta ljus. Bristerna i resultatet beror mer på mig än tekniken. Här kan du se smakprov…

Med Photoshop blir det otroligt enkelt att göra en av de klassiska lekarna med symetrier. Dessa spegelbilder skapar nya fascinerande figurer och landskap. I senaste Wired är det en artikel om japanen Kazuhiko Kawahra aka Palla som har gett ut en bok med Esherinspirerade bilder där han lekt med olika symetrier, främst med stadsmotiv. Det hela började tydligen som en kreativ lek som han publicerade på sin blog. Ivrigt påhejad av besökarna växte projektet vidare. Här är ett exempel på en av mina egna lekar med symetrier som jag gjort. Denna bild från Norra Älvstranden i Göteborg prinatde jag som en 1.8 x 0.6 meter stor bild som jag länge hade i entrén på kontoret. Många besökare stod länge och funderade på var den var fotograferade, det tog lång tid innan de genomskådade att den är ett samma bild speglad kring mitten.

Hmm – insåg att det var hög tid att ta tag i bloggandet och byta bilden i sidhuvudet. Så det fick bli en annan lek med repetitioner och symetrier.

Josh did a great job explaining how they handle Photo Metadata in Microsofts new operating system – Windows Vista. He stated by explaining why metadata should be stored inside the media file “The Truth Is In The File”. – “This enables metadata portability – wherever the file goes, the metadata goes”. But today metadata is everywhere, which makes it difficult to use across applications. Before every application developer had to write his own metadata handler or rely on third party libraries. Microsoft has created what they call WIC (Windows Imaging Components). WIC is an extensible, system-wide platform for image handling.

Applications can utilize WIC to:
• Read & write image formats
• Perform RAW conversion
• Read & write metadata
• Transcode between image formats

This means that it gets easy for developers to incorporate support for several metadata standards in their application. To address the problem with overlapping standards they have created a policy system. WIC rely on external Codecs for image file handling. For camera RAW files it utilizes Codecs from camera vendors. It has EXIF, IPTC and XMP suuport out of the box. WIC ships with Vista; but are also available for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server “Longhorn”

Microsoft recently bought iView which is a popular application for image keywording and mark-up. The have now incorporated it in their product portfolio under the name Microsoft Expression Media.

Peter talked about how Hasselblad (the camera software once begun as an Imacon scanner software) handles metadata in their camera software. They have supported the IIM version of IPTC metadata since the very first version. They also have an history log where you can see how the images has been processed, data from the can be embedded into the exported file.

Hasselblad uses a proprietary format for their raw capture. They did use the open DNG format for a while but has returned to their own format. The DNG format lacks support for some advanced features used for i.e. lens correction. They were asked if the documentation of the file format is publicly available – it is not. But they are cooperating with Apple and Adobe to let their software read the files. He did not omit the possibility to release it as open source in the future, but added that the lens correction are relaying on proprietary reference tables.

Note from the editor: This question regarding open and well-documented file format is very important in this discussion of metadata. Without an open format image repositories can’t read and edit all metadata. This question is of course just as relevant to put to other camera vendors. Most digital cameras use proprietary and secret file formats.

Clemens demonstrated Fotowares latest software version (5.3). The now have full support for XMP both as embedded and as sidecar files. You can create your own panels to enter an edit metadata. But you can also import panels from Adobe Photoshop. The software are multilingual but has no support for automatic translation. Though it can handle several languages in parallel for the same picture.

Canon has a image verification kit that works all their more advanced camera starting from the 20D model and upwards. Then new EOS 1D Marks III allows separate validation of metadata and image content. To use this feature you must activate this feature in the camera prior to shooting (there was a discussion regarding it’s impact on shooting speed). To validate you need to keep an un-modified original image file. Then it’s possible to validate that this file has not been edited or tampered with.

Canon has a wireless transmitter that makes it possible for the photographers to send image files direct to the image desk. The most common use is that the photographer only send low resolution images (JPEG S) during the event. After the event the Photographer gets a list of which images he/she should prepare as high-res images. The Canon EOS Utility can handle parallel remote reception of images from several cameras.

It was really great to see Canon, Nikon and Hasselblad attending this conference. This shows that they are serious on this matter. Nikon did not speak at the conference – the responded to late to the invitation. Nikon has features similar to those described above.
